The short version: Folktab’s free editor keeps your tunes on your own device. They are not sent to us, because there is nowhere to send them: there are no accounts and no database of users.
What is stored, and where
- Your library (tunes, sets, books, settings) is saved in your browser’s own storage (IndexedDB, with a small amount in localStorage while you type). It stays on your device.
- The app itself (its code, pages and piano sounds) is saved in your browser’s cache by a service worker, so Folktab opens and plays offline. It contains no personal information.
- Your theme choice (light or dark) is saved in localStorage so the page doesn’t flash.
- We do not use cookies or advertising, and nothing follows you from site to site.
Clearing your browser’s site data, or some browsers’ automatic clean-up, will delete your library. Use Library backup… in the editor to download a file you can keep and restore later.
Finding tunes
Find tunes online sends what you type in the search box to Folktab’s own server, which searches a copy of data from The Session. Nothing is sent to The Session or any other third party. Playback sounds are also served by Folktab itself, so playing a tune contacts no one else. See tune data for where the tunes come from.
Visit counts
We count visits and which features are used with our own copy of Liwan, a privacy-friendly analytics tool. It sets no cookies, does not store your IP address, and never includes your tunes, titles or search words. Nothing is shared with anyone else.
Our web server
Like any website, our server records standard access logs (time, requested page, IP address and browser type) for security and fixing problems. We keep them for a short time, up to 30 days, and do not use them to identify or profile anyone.
